Braces Dublin | What are Dental Braces?

Orthodontics is a speciality in dentistry that corrects the improper alignment of teeth and jaws. Our orthodontist is a dentist with post-graduate specialist training. Orthodontics uses devices such as a brace to correct the position of the teeth.

Your exact treatment will depend on the problems with your teeth. In some cases, you may have to wear headgear at night as well as a brace, and you may also need to have some teeth removed as part of your treatment. The length of treatment will depend on how complicated the problem is, but it’s usually between 18 and 24 months.

Orthodontic treatment uses appliances to correct the position of the teeth. In more severe cases, treatment may involve fixed braces and surgery to move the jaw.

This treatment is carried out in hospitals. We have every type of orthodontic solution available for our patients here at Killiney Dental. Whether you want the traditional fixed braces (metal) or tooth coloured ones, Invisalign or Inman Aligner, we have the ability to provide them all.

Even if your child wants to sport the colours of their local team, we will personalise their brackets and braces to make them more fun, less of a chore and more enjoyable to wear.

Braces Dublin| What are Invisalign Braces?

Invisalign straightens teeth using a series of nearly invisible, removable aligners that are custom-made specifically for your teeth. Each aligner gradually straightens teeth little by little into the desired position. Because aligners are removable, you can continue to eat your favorite foods and brush and floss normally to help keep teeth and gums healthy. Invisalign is a great option for anyone who wants invisible braces or needs to be able to remove their braces on occasion. Again, not all cases can be treated with Invisalign, but our orthodontist can easily tell you whether or not they are an option for you or your child. Feel free to contact a member of our dental team to arrange a consultation at Killiney Dental.

Braces Dublin | Can I have tooth-coloured braces?

Ceramic brackets are an aesthetic alternative to the more traditional metal ones. They have an obvious advantage in that they are less visible on the tooth as they are made from tooth-coloured ceramic.  They do come with certain frailties, however, such as being more fracture prone, and they are more expensive than the traditional metal brackets. So they may not be the right choice for many patients. Your orthodontist will advise whether or not you are a suitable candidate for ceramic brackets, so why not contact one of our dental team members at Killiney Dental on 01 2859067 to arrange an appointment with our orthodontist.

Dental Braces | Keeping Them Clean

Rigorous dental hygiene is essential to maintain your braces and teeth throughout your orthodontic treatment. Failure to clean can result in plaque gathering around the brackets and adhering to the tooth surface. This can lead to decay, pain, sensitivity and prolonged treatment times. In order to clean your mouth properly when wearing any orthodontic appliance, you should follow these steps when you get up in the morning and last thing before bed:

Step 1: Preparing to Brush Take off elastics and any other removable parts of your orthodontic appliance.

Step 2: Clean your braces. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to clean around the wires and pins of your braces. Brush from the top of each wire down to the bottom. Take your time to ensure that all plaque and debris are removed, and that you work all the way around upper and lower teeth.

Step 3: Brush your teeth. Clean each tooth individually. First, place your brush at a 45-degree angle the gum line, then apply gentle pressure as you move in a circular motion. Do this for about 10 seconds. Use the same brushing action on all outer and inner tooth surfaces, tilting the brush as needed to better reach the insides of smaller front teeth.

Step 4: Floss once a day. Have your dental professional show you the best way to floss, or follow the instructions on the product package. You may also want to use a flossing product designed for braces and orthodontic work, like a floss threader.

Step 5: Rinse and check your teeth. Rinse thoroughly with water or mouth rinse, and examine your teeth and braces in the mirror. Please Note: You may find it necessary to perform this routine at other times if food becomes lodged in your braces.
